Dragon Ball

‘Dragon Ball': Why Goku doesn't have eyebrows in his Super Saiyan 3 transformation

While there is no official explanation from Toriyama, we do know that the mangaka wanted to give Goku a much wilder look.

Dragon Ball Super Saiyan 3 Goku

The Super Saiyan 3 transformation of ‘Dragon Ball’ is one of the most beloved by fans; since its debut at the hands of Goku during the arc of Majin Buu marked a before and after in the series on the level of power, in addition to offering a unique look characterized by a long blond hair and a face marked by the absence of eyebrows. Thus, both Goku and, shortly after, Gotenks, with this level of power since their debut in ‘Dragon Ball Z’ became one of the favorite states of the followers of the franchise created by Akira Toriyama. But why doesn’t Super Saiyan 3 have eyebrows?

The most characteristic features of Super Saiyan 3

Although the third level of Super Saiyan is much more powerful than the second level, this form of Super Saiyan consumes much more energy than usual, so its users do not have much time to maintain this state. However, this transformation is much more noticeable than the second level, with long blond hair and a face that is much more pronounced, with the most noticeable feature being the absence of eyebrows.

While there is no official statement from Akira Toriyama about this particular aspect of Super Saiyan 3, we do know that the mangaka was looking for a design closer to the mythical Ozaru, the monstrous ape-like transformation of the Super Saiyan, while maintaining its human appearance. This is evident in the sketches discarded by its creator, some of which even included the return of the iconic tail.

All these unique characteristics of Super Saiyan 3 are meant to bring the Super Saiyan closer to his wildest and most imposing state, as well as to provoke fear and uncertainty in his opponents. However, these characteristics were abandoned in the subsequent transformations of Goku and company - such as Super Saiyan Blue or God - at least in the official canon, as Super Saiyan 4 of ‘Dragon Ball GT’ is even more bestial and savage.
