‘Dragon Ball Z’: What is Hercule/ Mr. Satan’s real name and his true identity?
Akira Toriyama revealed back in the day that the champion of humanity, Hercule (Or Mr. Satan as he’s known around the world) actually has a real name behind it all.
The names of the characters in ‘Dragon Ball’ have their own meaning and reason for being. All this thanks to its creator, Akira Toriyama, who has always left his mark on each and every one of his works. And the choice of names in his most popular work is no wonder. So much so, that beyond their meaning, some of them have first names unknown to the general public or even to fans, as is the case of the real names of Androids C-17 and C-18. However, another famous character from ‘Dragon Ball Z’ also has its own real name beyond what is considered artistic or popular: Hercule, better known as Mr. Satan. Yes, because the champion of humans is actually called Mark.
Mr. Satan and his daughter Videl and their devilish names
According to the katakana alphabet used in Japan to transcribe foreign terms into Japanese, Mark is read as ‘Maaku’. And this is when Toriyama carried out his own anagram, resulting in ‘akuma’, a term that makes reference to the devil in Japan. This is when the mangaka establishes a connection between the character’s real name and his stage name or pseudonym as a fighter: Mr. Satan.
“Mr. Satan is a fighter’s name, his real name is Mark or ‘Maaku’, which is an anagram of ‘Akuma’”, explained Toriyama at the time, with that word meaning “devil”. “In the area where Mr. Satan lives, names are not separated into surnames and given names, so his name is just this”, added the mangaka. But the relationship of Mr. Satan with the devil does not end there, since his daughter hides one more reference to the devil with her name, as Videl is an anagram of ‘Devil’.
