Dragon’s Dogma 2: this is why its performance on PC is so bad
At the moment of launch, Dragon’s Dogma 2 has been plagued with some pretty bad performance in its PC version. And now we know what the culprit is.
Even with its fantastic reviews, Dragon’s Dogma 2 has launched with mixed reception from a loud section of the fans due to its poor performance during gameplay (and the appearance of heavy amounts of microtransactions). And while Capcom is already working on a way to improve it, a fix won’t be arriving as soon as many would like.
But why is it that the game runs fine on Xbox Series X and PS5, and that some reviewers didn’t get the issues that have plagued many PC players? As it turns out, it’s because of the way the game simulates each and every NPC in its world. It turns out that each character is individually simulated entirely by use of your computer’s CPU, which makes it heavily dependent on it.
As such, the better your processor, the better performance you get during the game. This is the reason why many early reviewers didn’t have much issue with it, as they had top-of-the-line PCs able to handle the processing load. But even they admitted that when going into cities, where there are hundreds of NPCs moving around freely, frame-rates dive in an attempt to handle the massive load.
Can Dragon’s Dogma 2′s performance be fixed?
Capcom has already announced that they’re looking into ways to help improve performance, although it’s possible that even when they do there will be some slow-down for many players. The best option to handle the game on PC is to have a powerful CPU paired with the best and fastest RAM you can get, and not so much on the side of your graphics card.
However, should the devs add support for the newest frame generation technology like DLSS 3.0 and FSR 3.0, there’s a chance that they could unload many of these processes to be aided by a GPU.
Whatever path they take, let’s hope that a fix comes relatively fast to allow for players on PC to join in the fun of exploring everything Dragon’s Dogma 2 has to offer.
