‘Dune: Part One’s ending explained: how does the first of Denis Villeneuve’s adaptation end?

‘Dune: Part Two’ is a direct continuation of the previous movie in the series, so it’s necessary to know what happened there to understand what the new movie will show us.

Arrakis, the desert planet where Frank Herbert’s epic saga takes place, is not what you would call a natural paradise. Barren, without water - except for the nobles, of course - and full of dangers, whether you find the Fremen or a Sand Worm. This science fiction story has been recently adapted to the cinema by Denis Villeneuve, with ‘Dune: Part 2′ releasing on March 1. The first movie is essential to enjoy the second one since it is a direct continuation. In case memory fails - you can always rewatch it on HBO Max - it’s time to look back at what happened at the end of the previous film.

The story of ‘Dune’ so far

The emperor sent Duke Leto Atreides to rule Arrakis, which until then was in the hands of Baron Harkonnen. This family, far from accepting their fate with obedience, plans revenge and engineers the fall of the Atreides. He blackmails Dr. Yueh (promising to free his wife), who betrays the duke and contributes to his death directly. The doctor changes one of Leto’s teeth and inserts a capsule inside, which is activated when the baron arrives at Arrakeen. The poison gas kills everyone around him, except for the devious Harkonnen. The perspective then focuses to the character of Paul Atreides, the son of the duke and the Chosen One of the Bene Gesserit, a mysterious and powerful sect.

At the end of the film, Paul and his mother Jessica are held by the Harkonnens with the idea of leaving them to die in the desert, but the woman manages to use her power to manipulate her captors and escape. They survive the ravages of the desert and reunite with Duncan Idaho and Dr. Liet Kynes. Shortly after, they encounter imperial troops, and Duncan sacrifices himself for the protagonists to once again escape the situation successfully. Paul meets Stilgar, leader of the Fremen, and his future wife, the young Chani. Then, he accepts the death challenge proposed by one of the Fremen and emerges victorious. Arrakis at his feet, in peace? It all depends on Paul.

‘Dune: Part 2′ has received unanimous positive reviews.
