Dying Light: The Beast: Unraveling the game with Tymon Smektała

During our first impressions coverage of Dying Light: The Beast in the city of Los Angeles, California, thanks to an invitation from Techland, we had the opportunity to talk with Tymon Smektała, Director of the acclaimed Dying Light franchise, to learn the most intimate details of its next installment. Below, we bring you all the details of this talk to learn more about the world of parkour, zombies, and an unprecedented survival experience.

Innovation and gameplay experience in Dying Light: The Beast

From the outset, Smektała highlighted the development team’s approach to creating an immersive atmosphere and the constant challenge players will face in this zombie apocalypse. “Everything is designed to kill you,” he stated, referring to the new types of zombies and unforgiving environments.

Unlike previous installments that focused on cities, Dying Light: The Beast takes the action to a rural setting with vast forests, mountains and natural landscapes. This strategic shift seeks to enhance first-person parkour, allowing players to jump between rooftops, glide and move with agility in a less urban environment. “We want them to experience the tension of being in a dark forest, with only the flashlight, not knowing if the shadows are trees or zombies,” explained Smektała.

A focus on survival and cooperation

Survival is at the heart of Dying Light: The Beast. The game is designed to challenge players at every turn, making every encounter with the infected a fight for life.

In addition, the title incorporates a cooperative mode for up to four players. The team has “played with the formula”, allowing players to customize their characters and their appearance, encouraging replayability and team fun. The idea is that together, players can “destroy everything” in their path, facing the “beast” that gives the game its name.

Technology for total immersion

Dying Light: The Beast benefits from the studio’s proprietary development engine, designed to optimize performance and visual experience. Smektała mentioned significant improvements in lighting and the ability to render a greater number of objects on screen, contributing to a more dynamic and detailed world. “We used ray tracing for the game,” he revealed, highlighting the commitment to state-of-the-art graphics.

Accessibility and new sensations for players

For newcomers to the franchise, Smektała assured that there is no need to be afraid. The game focuses on explaining the lore, characters, and mechanics in an accessible way. The goal is to create “new sensations” for players, a gaming experience that combines the adrenaline rush of parkour with the tension of a post-apocalyptic world.

“We want players to experience the satisfaction of overcoming these challenges and discovering a highly immersive world,” concluded Smektała, promising an unforgettable adventure for fans of zombie games and parkour.
