Early Xbox One models are crashing after a firmware update, leaving some units of this first wave of consoles stuck in a loop and unable to function online.

Early models of the Xbox One are experiencing problems that seem to render them unusable

Users of the launch model of the Xbox One, the version released in 2013 known as the “VCR,” are reporting that the console is in an unusable state, unable to install new firmware updates.

According to a report from Digital Foundry, users on NeoGAF have reported that their original version of the Xbox One is failing to install system updates on the console. This model of the console, whether new or used and factory reset versions, is apparently failing to perform this update. By failing to complete this process, the console is stuck in a loop, in some cases leaving the unit unusable, raising concerns about the state of modern consoles and their need for an internet connection.

The media outlet conducted tests on their own consoles and presented these issues, mentioning that “systems running older firmware revisions fail when connected to Xbox Live.” The consoles they used in their tests were running on 2017 and 2018 dashboards, and could not be updated online or through an offline update via USB. It’s worth noting that while this doesn’t affect all consoles, a factory reset would “effectively ‘brick’ the hardware until Microsoft can come up with a solution.” On the other hand, they mention that the console can still be used, so the hard drives can be used to run games, but without internet access and therefore without certain features depending on the console’s online configuration.

For now, it appears that this only affects older models and does not affect the Xbox One S, which was released in 2016.
