Early Superman reviews drop and not everyone’s impressed: “It is a mess, narratively and tonally”

James Gunn’s DCU movie reboot takes a strong and solid step, and while there are some complaints, it looks to be a solid experience.

Superman
Update:

The DCU movie reboot is just a few days away. This one leaves behind the dark universe created by Zack Snyder that many fans would like to see continue, and now comes a world that looks colorful and is accompanied by great hope. With James Gunn’s ‘Superman’ just around the corner, arriving in theaters on Friday, July 11, the first comments on both specialized sites and social networks have begun to appear.

On sites such as Rotten Tomatoes, the first reviews have appeared and have given a more than positive rating for the film. As of this writing, it sits at 85% on the platform with 182 reviews, of which 154 are Fresh (positive) and 28 Rotten (negative).

What are critics saying about ‘Superman’ on social media?

With its Rotten Tomatoes score, you can expect equally reviews, and yet, ome people get to praise the movie, yet are critical, mentioning some of its weak points.

For many journalists, the film made them feel happy mentioning the great participation of its actors and what was seen on screen. Sean O’ Connel of Comic Book Resource mentions that “Perfect cast & world building. It’s unapologetically comic booky, which won’t work for some.” Perri Nemiroff of Collider wrote “the beating heart of the film is Superman’s humanity, and his insistence on doing good and making the world a better place.” Meanwhile, Eric Goldman, mentioned that “James Gunn embraces the earnest, sometimes lovably corny side of comics and their super (ahem) fun concepts in a way that evokes Raimi’s Spider-Man.”

Finally, Brandon Pope ends with the biggest message of hope, mentioning that “In a time of division, cynicism, and rising hate, it’s heartening to think that a new generation may walk away from this film believing Superman is cool, and in turn, believing kindness is cool too.”

On the other hand, those who have mentioned some of the film’s weaknesses, such as that it sometimes feels “overstuffed” or a “mess” are quick to mention that the film is fun. Scott Menzel mentions that “It is a mess, narratively and tonally, but hey, at least it’s refreshingly fun, entertaining, and not boring.” Daniel Howat of Next Best Picture mentioned that “It’s overstuffed and messy, but it’s always fun. This is the most comic-booky version of Superman we’ve seen on the big screen, and it pays off.”

The opinion in Meristation

From our side, our colleagues in Spain have already seen the film and have commented that Superman’s “action, special effects and tachycardic rhythm are the hallmarks of James Gunn in this film, which marks the successful beginning of the DC Universe. Without a lot of frills and without innovating too much, ‘Superman’ has earned its place among the great superhero movies for its storytelling, introspection, character-drawing and love of doing things right.”
