Eiichiro Oda ('One Piece') bids farewell to 'Jujutsu Kaisen' with a touching message to Akutami Gege

The author dedicates a beautiful illustration to his heir, transforming the characters of Jujutsu Kaisen into Straw Hats.

It has always been said that ‘Naruto’, ‘One Piece’ and ‘Bleach’ were the heirs to ‘Dragon Ball’, while ‘Shingeki no Kyojin’, ‘Jujutsu Kaisen’ and ‘Kimetsu no Yaiba’ were the next generation of shonen called to the throne (My Hero Academia and its ending, best left unsaid). Thus, Eiichiro Oda has not only outlived his contemporaries, but also his three successors. The last manga he saw come to an end was Akutami Gege, to which he bid farewell with an emotional message and a beautiful illustration.

“Akutami-kun, congratulations on six and a half amazing years! You’ve truly outdone yourself. Take a well-deserved break, and once you’re recharged, let’s catch up over a meal again sometime!!” The following picture accompanied the message, a wonderful one with Itadori as Luffy, in which we can also see Nobara as Nami in the background (beating up Gojo, who plays Sanji) and finally Megumi as Chopper. All of them in a Going Merry (or Thousand Sunny) with a cat as a mask, exactly the animal Akutami Gege usually represents himself with.

Chapter 271 is responsible for putting an end to a journey that began in March 2018 and has not stopped gaining fans since. A true mass phenomenon, it was named “the most popular anime in the world” by the Guinness Book of Records a year ago, ahead of One Piece and Dragon Ball. Although its ending suffers from the same sin as all recent successful shonen endings (namely being rushed), along the way we have had some of the best arcs in manga history. And while Gege has struggled to keep up the pace of the series in his final run, we wouldn’t rule out the return of Jujutsu Kaisen with a part 2 in the future. Let’s keep our fingers crossed. Or, if they’re Sukuna’s, eat them.
