Elden Ring is not getting any more DLC after Shadow of the Erdtree, but Miyazaki is not done with the franchise
When the Shadow of the Erdtree expansion arrives, it’ll be the end of Elden Ring. But director Hidetaka Miyazaki is open to more in the series.
Hidetaka Miyazaki is one of the most relevant figures in the video game industry both today and in the history of the medium. The genius at the head of FromSoftware basically helped create an entirely new genre, with Elden Ring releasing two years ago to raucous applause. Now the studio is preparing for the launch of its first, and last, DLC: Shadow of the Erdtree. Last? Yes, this was confirmed by Miyazaki in an interview with the Chinese media Zhihu.
During the interview, Miyazaki talks about why there are no plans for more expansions to the game, noting that “Elden Ring emphasizes exploration and adventure in a big world. To offer such an experience, you inevitably need a vast and enormous stage. Therefore, instead of dividing it into several parts, it was better to just make one big expansion. “If they were sold separately, it would reduce the freedom of exploration and the sense of adventure.”
Elden Ring, one of the biggest successes in the history of the industry
Shadow of the Erdtree aims to end Elden Ring on a high note, but Hidetaka Miyazaki has not closed the door on there being a sequel to the game in the future. The success of his work and the enormous number of sales it has accumulated makes it possible to believe in the return of the series in the future.
In our review of Elden Ring we stated that “FromSoftware surpasses itself and adapts the Souls formula to a prodigious world, overwhelming both for its scale and its artistic direction, its freedom to explore and the natures of its many, many challenges. An extraordinary milestone that will likely cast as long a shadow over other open-world games as Dark Souls has already cast over action RPGs over the past decade.”
