Emergency toolkit launched to help users avoid scams after Windows 10 support ends
The Restart Project and LibreOffice offer free resources to guide users with unsupported PCs through a safe transition.

With Windows 10 support ending on October 14, 2025, millions of users face uncertainty, especially those whose hardware doesn’t meet the strict requirements of Windows 11. To address this, The Restart Project has released the End of Windows 10 Toolkit, a free resource designed to help users and community repair groups navigate the transition safely and avoid falling victim to scams.
What’s in the toolkit?
The toolkit offers practical guidance for:
- Community repair events: Adding Windows 10 support to existing Repair Cafés or Restart Parties
- Dedicated “End of 10” meetups: Similar to Linux Installfests, these events help users explore alternatives like Linux Mint or Fedora
- Collaboration with local organizations: Partnering with Linux user groups, digital inclusion nonprofits, and repair shops to expand support
- Scam prevention: Educating users on how to avoid misleading upgrade offers or unsafe downloads
The Restart Project emphasizes that many older PCs are still powerful enough to run modern operating systems, and that forced obsolescence is both unnecessary and environmentally harmful.

LibreOffice and the Linux alternative
LibreOffice, backed by The Document Foundation, supports the campaign by encouraging users to switch to Linux-based operating systems and adopt open-source productivity tools. This approach:
- Extends the lifespan of existing hardware
- Reduces electronic waste
- Avoids costly upgrades or risky third-party solutions
LibreOffice offers compatibility with Microsoft Office formats and is part of a broader push for digital sustainability.
Microsoft’s decision could leave over 400 million devices unsupported, increasing the risk of scams and contributing to e-waste. The Restart Project and its partners argue that users deserve safe, affordable, and sustainable options, not forced upgrades or premature hardware replacement.
