'Escape at Dannemora', the Ben Stiller crime series is now available on Netflix: how many episodes it has and where it was filmed

We take a look at key details of the new-to-Netflix series, ‘Escape at Dannemora’, from the creative mind of Ben Stiller.

Best known for his work in comedy, Ben Stiller has been surprising audiences for the past decade as a great TV executive producer. While critics and fans recently enjoyed Apple TV+’s ‘Severance’, we can go back a few years to see his work in ‘Escape at Dannemora’. Originally released on Showtime in 2018, the series recently arrived on Netflix this week. Based on the real-life prison break at Clinton Correctional Facility in Dannemora, New York, the series features a dark and tense atmosphere, along with a really interesting cast that helps the show captivate viewers looking for a tense, crime-focused series.

How many episodes are there in ‘Escape at Dannemora’?

The series consists of seven episodes, each packed with suspense and layered storytelling. As the episodes unfold, viewers are drawn deeper into the relationships between the characters, the planning of the escape, and the dramatic consequences. The plot revolves around Richard Matt and David Sweat, two convicted murderers, and Joyce “Tilly” Mitchell, the prison employee who helps them escape because of her complex emotional and romantic involvement with the men.

The main cast includes:

  • Benicio del Toro as Richard Matt
  • Patricia Arquette as Joyce “Tilly” Mitchell
  • Paul Dano as David Sweat
  • Bonnie Hunt as Catherine Leahy Scott
  • Eric Lange as Lyle Mitchell
  • David Morse as Gene Palmer

Where was ‘Escape at Dannemora’ filmed?

To enhance the authenticity of the series, much of ‘Escape at Dannemora’ was filmed on location in upstate New York, near the actual Clinton Correctional Facility. For the prison scenes, the filmmakers used a decommissioned prison in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania that closely resembled the layout of the real facility. This added layer of realism gives the series a haunting and gritty feel, perfectly suited to the dark narrative.
