Update:

A few days ago, we received news of the permanent closure of Gainax, the studio responsible for creating Evangelion, one of the most famous cult anime series in history. And now we have confirmation that the franchise will celebrate its 30th anniversary with a new short anime special (13 minutes) that will be scripted and supervised by Hideaki Anno himself, creator of the original series.

This short film will premiere exclusively at an in-person event to be held in Japan in February 2026, and will be directed by Naoyuki Asano, the animation director of Evangelion: 3.0+1.0 Thrice Upon a Time. Beyond Anno, the production will be supervised by other veterans of the saga such as Kazuya Tsurumaki, Shinji Higuchi, and Kazuki Todoroki. Could this be an anime that is more important than it seems? Will it be canon? These are questions we won’t be able to answer for another couple of months.

This news has taken all Evangelion fans by surprise, as after the release of the last film, it was assumed that the universe created by Hideaki Anno had finally come to an end. However, it seems that those responsible had other plans in mind. Shinji may have to get back into the EVA once again. However, some fans of the series have not reacted enthusiastically to this unexpected return. Many believe that Anno and the rest are squeezing too much out of the IP instead of leaving it alone.
