In 2024, we celebrate the 40th anniversary of the birth of Dragon Ball, one of the most important works of popular culture. Although unfortunately the Akira Toriyama sensei died this year, one of his last activities was to supervise a new anime, ‘Dragon Ball Daima’. This new series, which brings us back to Goku and company will do it with an important twist, all turn into younger selves. What is ‘Dragon Ball Daima’?
‘Dragon Ball Daima’ is the anime that will celebrate the 40th anniversary of Dragon Ball. The series was announced late last year during the New York Comic-Con with a short teaser and the promise to see Goku as how he looked as a child. The series will be set between Dragon Ball Z and Dragon Ball Super, and will of course be part of the official canon.
The original synopsis reads as follows: “Due to a conspiracy, Goku and his friends become small. To set things right, they will head to a new world! ‘Dragon Ball Daima’ is a great action adventure in an unknown and mysterious world. And since Goku has to compensate for his size to fight he will use Nyoibo, the sacred staff with which we had not seen him for a long time.”

As for the meaning of Daima, as such and according to Toriyama, “‘DAIMA’ is a made-up term, which in Japanese characters would be “大魔” or in English would be something like ‘Evil’.”
When Does ‘Dragon Ball Daima’ Come Out?
After its announcement, we only knew that this series would be released in the fall 2024, a release window that was narrowed down to October 2024 after the death of Akira Toriayama. A few weeks ago, it was revealed that ‘Dragon Ball Daima’ will be released on October 11, which also coincides with the release of the video game Dragon Ball: Sparking! ZERO for PC, PS5, and Xbox Series X|S.
The release date was originally only for Japan, but thanks to the modern times we live in, the release date will be the same for the whole world. Which brings us to the next point.
When will the next episode of ‘Dragon Ball Daima’ premiere and how many episodes will it have?
The premiere date of ‘Dragon Ball Daima’ has been set for October 11, 2024. It will have a total of 20 episodes, which will be aired weekly, so if the broadcast is continuous and does not have a break, the series will end in mid-February. The first episode will be 40 minutes long, so it will be longer than the others.
How to Watch ‘Dragon Ball Daima’?
Just last week, anime streaming platform Crunchyroll announced that they would be taking over the distribution of ‘Dragon Ball Daima’ outside of Japan, bringing the anime to the territories of North America, Central America, South America, Australia, New Zealand, South Africa, Indian Subcontinent and Southeast Asia.
Although it is not yet known how long we will have to wait, the chapters will arrive in simulcast for the service’s subscribers a few hours after their premiere in Japan, and will initially be available with Japanese audio with English, Spanish, and Portuguese subtitles.
‘Dragon Ball Daima’ Episode Duration and Format
The first episode of ‘Dragon Ball Daima’ will premiere on October 11th at 11:40 pm, Japan time. ‘Dragon Ball Daima’ will consist of weekly episodes that will premiere every Sunday. The series will continue with its traditional episode format of approximately 22 minutes, although the first episode is expected to be extended by 10 minutes.
