Experts agree: GTA 6 won’t reach 60 FPS even on the PS5 Pro

Analysts at Digital Foundry do not believe that Grand Theft Auto VI can run at 60 FPS even on the PS5 Pro: here are the main reasons.

Update:

Over the past few days, numerous rumors have circulated suggesting that Grand Theft Auto VI might offer a 60 FPS mode on consoles. However, analysts at Digital Foundry believe these expectations are unrealistic even for the PS5 Pro and argue that, based on the information available so far, it is highly unlikely that the upcoming Rockstar Games title will achieve that frame rate on current hardware.

Digital Foundry believes that the real bottleneck for GTA 6 will be the CPU

In the latest episode of DF Weekly, the Digital Foundry team analyzed recent rumors about a supposed Performance Mode for GTA 6. Their conclusion is clear: the main obstacle would not be the consoles’ graphics power, but rather the load the processor will have to handle when rendering such a complex open world on screen.

As they explain, the level of detail shown in both the trailers and the official screenshots reveals a city that is much denser than in any previous installment, with a huge number of pedestrians, vehicles, physics simulations, artificial intelligence, and all kinds of systems running simultaneously. All of this places a strain on the CPU that is very difficult to reduce simply by lowering the graphics quality.

For this reason, the experts at Digital Foundry believe that even the PS5 Pro would have a very hard time offering a 60 FPS mode. Although Sony’s console has a more powerful GPU than the standard version of the machine, with better ray tracing and technologies like PSSR, its processor offers hardly any improvements over that of the base PS5, so the bottleneck would still be present.

A 40 FPS mode for GTA 6 would be a much more realistic option

Instead of aiming for 60 FPS—which seems unattainable with current hardware—analysts believe Rockstar could opt for an increasingly common solution: a 40 FPS mode compatible with 120 Hz TVs. This option would offer a noticeably smoother experience than the traditional 30 FPS without requiring the massive increase in processing power needed to double the frame rate to 60 FPS.

In any case, Digital Foundry emphasizes that its reports are estimates based on the footage shown by Rockstar itself and on the specifications of current hardware. For its part, the company has not yet officially confirmed what graphics and/or performance modes Grand Theft Auto VI will feature, or whether there will be different modes at all, so we’ll have to wait for them to reveal new technical details to find out how the game will ultimately perform on the PS5, PS5 Pro, and Xbox Series X|S.
