Farewell to Hogwarts Legacy Director’s Cut: Warner cancels Definitive Edition of Avalanche and Rocksteady

Warner Bros. Games does not believe that the additional content of the Definitive Edition justifies its release and price increase.

Hogwarts Legacy

The case of Hogwarts Legacy will never cease to surprise: after being the best-selling game of 2023, no additional content was released beyond tiny updates with hardly any new content: no major DLC, no expansions, absolutely nothing. Now we know that there won’t even be a definitive edition that Avalanche Studios and Rocksteady (creators of Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice League) were working on.

According to Bloomberg, both studios were working on a major expansion that would have been released more than two years after the base game. Warner Bros. Games seems to have decided to finally cancel it so that a final edition of Hogwarts Legacy would have lost all sense of having almost no new content. The publisher found no reason to justify an obvious price increase for this Director’s Cut edition, so the decision to cancel it was a resounding one.

The strange case of Hogwarts Legacy and the situation of Warner Bros. Games

Hogwarts Legacy was released in the spring of 2023 and has since sold no less than 34 million copies, a figure that is not within everyone’s reach. After not releasing any additional content, what Warner Bros. Games has announced is that a sequel is already in the works, something that allows the company to be optimistic despite its delicate situation.

And in recent months, everything has been bad news that has finally led to the closure of Monolith Productions, creators of the Middle-earth saga, and in charge of a game starring Wonder Woman, which would also be canceled along with the closure of the studio, as well as the closure, this time definitive, of Multiversus. The situation made Warner bet on insurance by announcing a new game of the Batman Arkham saga in charge of Rocksteady, and the publisher began to focus on its major franchises: Mortal Kombat, Harry Potter, Game of Thrones, and DC in general and Batman in particular.
