Farewell to ‘Squid Game,’ creator details when series will end and why it’s so soon

It will end much earlier than some people predicted.

After three years of waiting, ‘Squid Game’ is getting ready for the premiere of its second season. On December 26th, we will relive the enormous tension that this work generates with its protagonist Seong Gi-hun, and all those years of waiting have not been in vain, as the series is ready for a finale that will come sooner than many think. Its creator, Hwang Dong-hyuk, spoke to The Hollywood Reporter about this and the reason why it will end earlier than expected, confirming that the third season will be the last and will arrive in 2025.

Hwang Dong-hyuk admits that “I felt a certain amount of pressure because I knew that there was a huge amount of anticipation out there, and honestly when I was creating season one I didn’t plan in any detail that there would be a second season. However, I did have something in mind that if there were to ever be a second season, I had this idea of what story I would tell; I thought it would be the story of Gi-hun turning away from where he was at the end of season one and going back into the games in order to put a stop to the game.”

An ending that does not drag on longer than necessary

The creator of Squid Game has confirmed that “throughout seasons two and three, it’s going to be about that very journey by Gi-hun that you’re going to be following, both physically and emotionally. When I was thinking about the idea for the ending of season three, I think it sort of naturally came to me that this was the finale,” the creator said. “I believed that with that story, I was able to tell everything that I wanted to tell through the story of Squid Game and also in the perspective of Gi-hun as a character, and I thought that we don’t need any further stories from here.”

‘Squid Game’ is ready for its finale, with the premiere of its second season and a third already confirmed, we will just have to wait. Its creator is clear that he does not want to prolong the series more than necessary, and that is why he is clear about when and how it will end.
