Farewell to the wrestling legend: Hulk Hogan dies at 71
One of the icons of wrestling leaves us.
The world of wrestling is in mourning. Terry Gene Bollea, better known as Hulk Hogan, the first great superstar of American wrestling, died Thursday at the age of 71.
The news, reported by TMZ, indicates that the iconic wrestler suffered “cardiac arrest” at his residence in Clearwater, Florida. According to the website, several police cars and paramedics were seen outside Hogan’s home, and the “Hulkster” was taken on a stretcher to an ambulance. It is known that Hogan had been dealing with recent health issues, including back surgery a few weeks ago. Although TMZ had reported a month ago that the wrestler was on his “deathbed,” his wife, Sky, denied at the time that his condition was serious.
Who was Hulk Hogan?
Hulk Hogan became a global phenomenon in the 1980s, serving as the central figure of the then World Wrestling Federation (WWF). His charisma and catchphrase, “Whatcha gonna do, brother, when Hulkamania runs wild on you?” resonated with millions of fans, propelling wrestling to unprecedented popularity.
His impact transcended the ring. Hogan made his Hollywood debut with a role in the movie Rocky III, which opened the doors to international fame and allowed him to fight in arenas in Japan, Mexico, and the United States. Back in what is now WWE, he was a key player in WrestleMania, the company’s biggest event, starring in memorable matches, such as his legendary confrontation with André the Giant.
Although he spent much of his career with Vince McMahon and his company, Hogan also made his mark on WCW during the 1990s, participating in the famous “Monday Night Wars” and even surpassing WWE in ratings. In the new millennium, he also had a stint with TNA, but he always returned to his home, WWE, where he was recognized as one of the most influential figures in the history of sports entertainment. His legacy as a pioneer and ambassador of wrestling will live on forever.
