Fatal Fury: City of the Wolves - First Impressions of Chun-Li

Street Fighter’s strongest woman is about to bring her Kung Fu to South Town.

Update:

New content continues to arrive for Fatal Fury: City of the Wolves. And after an impressive Ken Masters and the return of Joe Higashi, the crossover with Street Fighter isn’t over yet. As initially announced, the third fighter to arrive in SNK’s fighting game is none other than Chun-Li, bringing her look as we’ve seen her in Street Fighter 6. And a few days before her arrival in South Town, we already had the opportunity to play with her as part of early access.

The fastest kicks in the world arrive in South Town

After more than 30 years in fighting games, Chun-Li has become that character we’ve all used at some point and learned her techniques and powers. Despite having fairly limited access to the character, the play time was more than enough to understand how she had been taken from Street Fighter to Fatal Fury: City of the Wolves. And although it wasn’t as straightforward as Ken’s case a few months ago, it’s an excellent job.

Something that surprised me is how certain moves haven’t changed at all. The classic Spinning Bird Kick remains the same, and even the “heel kick” that has been around since Street Fighter 2 is intact. I was even struck by how the Hundred Lightning Kicks, which changed its input for Street Fighter 6, comes with that change to City of the Wolves. Everything remains very familiar and with very few changes, beyond some adjustments to the visual and aesthetic aspects of this title.

As with Ken, there are some details that may not be exactly the same, but like the crimson fist, we still have a more modern Chun-Li, which isn’t bad at all.

Visually, the character fits in very well with the game, blending in with the current characters in the Fatal Fury roster. And while Ken arrived in his classic red outfit, Chun-Li is not far behind, also arriving with the option of choosing the classic blue outfit we first saw her in 34 years ago.

The experience leaves a good taste in my mouth and even makes me think about how this collaboration between Fatal Fury and Street Fighter could continue to grow, or whether any other companies would be willing to introduce their characters to SNK to continue with this collaborative idea.
