Fatal Fury: City of the Wolves - First Impressions of Mr. Big

One of SNK’s most missed characters returns with a triumphant comeback.

Fatal Fury: City of the Wolves - First Impressions of Mr. Big

When SNK announced its downloadable content for the first year of Fatal Fury: City of the Wolves, the mix of characters was crystal clear: classic characters from the franchise and two guests, which was a very interesting combination. And although the crossover factor always attracts attention, the fifth DLC character was “THE” one that caught everyone’s eye. Mr. Big, one of the characters whose origins date back to Art of Fighting, is now back after more than two decades of absence. And a few days before his arrival in South Town, we already had the opportunity to play with him as part of early access.

The enormous power of Mr. Big makes itself felt

I would be lying if I said that, like Ken and Chun-Li, I know Mr. Big inside out. And I think that’s part of his appeal. Mr. Big appeared in Art of Fighting back in 1992, and his last appearance was in The King of Fighters ’98: Ultimate Match, a remake of the title that came to consoles in 2008. Nearly 17 years have passed since we last saw this character, who, interestingly, made his debut in Fatal Fury.

What can I say about Mr. Big? First of all, he lives up to his name, being one of the heaviest characters in the game. He also fits the fighting game archetype, making him a somewhat slow and strong character. However, what surprised me most about this character was the speed of his attacks, agile combos, and special moves that can really lock down your opponent if executed well.

It is striking how SNK not only managed to adapt the character’s movements to this franchise, but also applied the use of the REV system. Despite the time that has passed, I was able to recognize some of his iconic moves, but on the other hand, I felt as if I were meeting someone new. It was certainly a strange experience.

Visually, it’s curious to see this character now “old,” trading his iconic mustache for a completely white beard. And yet, he remains visually impressive.

Mr. Big leaves behind the impression of a character who is quite strong and impressive. It’s a powerful conclusion to the first cycle of DLC characters for Fatal Fury: City of the Wolves, leaving us eager to find out if more characters will be coming to South Town soon, and who they might be.
