Final Fantasy XIV announces Evercold, the MMORPG’s new expansion coming to Nintendo Switch 2

Square Enix’s hit game continues to expand and is making the leap to a new platform.

Update:

It’s been almost two years since the release of Final Fantasy XIV: Dawntrail—enough time to learn about the next major expansion for Square Enix’s popular MMORPG. It’s called Evercold, set to arrive in January 2027 and kick off the Godless Realms Saga, taking players to a new region and offering a massive amount of content, in what looks to be one of the most comprehensive releases in the game’s history.

Naoki Yoshida, the game’s director and producer, made the announcement during the Final Fantasy XIV Fan Festival 2026, held in Anaheim, United States. The event also officially confirmed the MMORPG’s release on Nintendo Switch 2 this coming August. The launch won’t be just any ordinary launch: it will include a month of free early access, designed to test the stability of the servers on the new console.

The vast world of Final Fantasy XIV and its ongoing expansion

Evercold will introduce a wide range of new features, starting with an increase in the level cap from 100 to 110. In addition, there will be new jobs, including a new tank and a ranged physical DPS class, as well as new cities, zones, and dungeons.

The expansion will also introduce significant changes to the combat system through the Reborn and Evolved modes. The former will retain the game’s current core mechanics, while the latter will place greater emphasis on each class’s unique identity, promoting more distinct playstyles.

‘Neon Genesis Evangelion’ Comes to Final Fantasy XIV

As if that weren’t enough, Final Fantasy XIV has announced a collaboration with ‘Neon Genesis Evangelion,’ the influential anime created by Hideaki Anno. This collaboration will include a 24-player raid, with the script and composition handled by Yoko Taro, in direct collaboration with Studio Khara.

A Historic Launch on Nintendo Switch 2

Final Fantasy XIV will not be coming to Nintendo Switch 2 in the conventional way. A separate subscription will be required to play on the hybrid console. Unlike the PC and other console versions, the Switch 2 edition will have its own monthly fee, although players with an active subscription on other platforms will be able to purchase it at a 50% discount. Additionally, a Nintendo Switch Online subscription will not be required to access the game.
