First trailer for DC’s ‘Lanterns’: it has a lot of ‘True Detective’ and ‘Yellowstone’ but little of ‘Green Lantern’
The new DC Studios series finally gets a look in action with its first trailer, although Green Lantern fans aren’t too convinced by HBO’s proposal.

After months of waiting and delays, we finally have the first trailer for ‘Lanterns,’ the new superhero series from DC Studios as part of James Gunn’s new DCU. However, superhero fans’ fears have come true upon seeing that this series, for the moment, has little to do with Green Lantern, betting everything on a tone halfway between True Detective and Yellowstone. We only get a couple of fleeting shots of the Green Lanterns’ ring or costume, as shown in the first trailer below.
This is what the Green Lanterns are like in James Gunn’s DCU
Of course, the authors of this series deserve our complete trust; not surprisingly, it’s a galactic team—everything the series isn’t—made up of Chris Mundy, Damon Lindelof (‘Watchmen,’ ‘Lost’) and Tom King (writer of ‘Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow’ and ‘The Vision’), whose vision of the Green Lanterns will premiere on HBO Max in August of this year, on a specific date to be announced.

At the moment, little is known about the plot of ‘Lanterns’, beyond the fact that two Green Lanterns, veteran Hal Jordan (Kyle Chandler) and his new recruit, the irreverent John Stewart (Aaron Pierre), are involved in the investigation of a murder case in Nebraska, suggesting a more detective and neo-western tone than a typical superhero series. At least we have a couple of examples of the power of the Green Lanterns with a flying scene and a display of superhuman strength and endurance, as well as a suit hanging in a closet that has caused quite a stir among fans.
An expanding DC Universe
‘Lanterns’ won’t be the only James Gunn DCU product this year. First, we’ll see ‘Supergirl’ (June 26) in theaters, followed a few months later by ‘Clayface’ (October 23), the first step toward comic book horror in this superhero universe, which has already given us other products such as ‘Superman,’ ‘Creature Commandos,’ and the second season of ‘Peacemaker.’ Will we see Hal Jordan, John Stewart, and other Green Lanterns alongside Superman and Supergirl? Many of us hope so, although preferably with the look of a Green Lantern.
