Foamstars, Square Enix’s bubbly multiplayer shooter for PS4 and PS5, goes free-to-play: date confirmed

The multiplayer title launched on PS4 and PS5 at the beginning of this year 2024 surrenders to the current market and abandons its full-price format.

Foamstars, Square Enix’s four-on-four multiplayer shooter video game for PS4 and PS5, will go free-to-play on October 4, leaving behind its full-price business model and embracing the free-to-play market with micropayments. The announcement was made just six months after the game’s launch, confirming that in just over a month, the bubbly Toylogic title will no longer cost 30 euros, although it will still be included in the PS Plus catalog.

Foamstars seeks a second chance as a free-to-play game

This is what the Japanese company announced on its website: “Thank you for your support of Foamstars. Foamstars, currently available on PlayStation 5 and PlayStation 4, will change from its current regional pricing to a free-to-play title starting from October 4th 2024 at 1:00AM. In addition, while previously a subscription to PlayStationPlus was required to play Foamstars, after the price change, consumers who are not subscribed to PlayStation Plus may download and play Foamstars for free,” confirming the same distribution model as other free-to-play PlayStation games.

In addition, current Foamstars players who purchased the game at full price or through PS Plus will receive the LegacyGift Pack, which includes a variety of in-game items, including twelve exclusive Bubble Beastie colors, an exclusive table art, and the Legacy title.

All this comes after the cold reception of Foamstars since February of this year by the gaming community, with very discreet numbers, to which we must add the confirmation of Square Enix itself on a performance of the title well below expectations.
