He envisages a future where small studios will be able to create massive titles thanks to artificial intelligence.
The use of artificial intelligence has become a key issue in many areas. The creative aspect of audiovisual production raises important ethical questions about the use of these tools. While some are surprised by the fast results and decreasing number of errors, others are concerned about the cost of this work. Among the voices on this issue, Tim Sweeney’s position is very surprising. Sweeney is the founder and CEO of Epic Games and has spoken about the role of these tools in the future of video games.
Will AI be a tool that studios should use?
In a recent interview with IGN, Sweeney mentioned that thanks to advances in technology, we have been able to achieve new and better games, and he expects this to happen with AI as well. “AI characters giving you the possibility of infinite dialogue with a really simple setup for creators means small teams will be able to create games with immense amounts of characters and immense and interactive worlds,” he said. “What would it take for a 10-person team to build a game like Zelda Breath of the Wild in which the AI is just doing all the dialogue and you’re just writing some character synopsis? That’s totally going to be within reach over the next few years.”
Sweeney mentions that this may be “a good thing” as long as human labor is still present. AI is a technology that “ultimately there to empower human creators to create stuff more efficiently,” not replace them.
“So I think there’s going to be a massive evolution as everybody scrambles to learn new skills as you get on top of what’s possible here. But I think as with any other technology that’s improved our lives, the ultimate net opportunity for people is higher,” he said.
Epic Games’ run-ins with AI
While Sweeney talks about the use of AI, let’s remember that a few weeks ago, the arrival of Darth Vader in Fortnite, Epic Games’ flagship game, caused a stir as they used AI to reproduce the voice of actor James Earl Jones. Despite having the family’s permission, the responses sparked such controversy that SAG-AFTRA filed a complaint against Epic over this.
