Fortnite hosts a surprise concert with Snoop Dogg and Ice Spice in New York’s Times Square
Fortnite surprised New York City with a live event featuring Snoop Dogg and Ice Spice, which was also streamed in-game.
Fortnite’s much-anticipated The Prelude event, which brings Chapter 5 to a close, turned out to be an unexpected surprise for fans on both sides of the screen. Epic Games organized an Ice Spice and Snoop Dogg concert in New York’s Times Square, which managed to fill the iconic thoroughfare. In this way, Epic continues its tireless efforts to blur the line between the virtual and real worlds.
Here’s how Fortnite’s surprise concert with Snoop Dogg and Ice Spice went down in Times Square
Since late October, Epic Games has been trumpeting The Prelude inside Fortnite, a digital event that took place on November 1 at 6:30 PM ET. However, half an hour earlier, Epic revealed the true nature of the event: it was a Snoop Dogg and Ice Spice concert live from New York, in the iconic Times Square. This concert was streamed to players around the world via Fortnite.
Despite this sudden turn of events, the Times Square was already packed with people who were amazed to witness a short but intense concert, when they thought they were simply attending a Fortnite announcement, which was indeed the case. The small concert served not only as a musical event, but also as a way for Epic Games to continue experimenting with new ways to bring the virtual world closer to the real one; we may see more of these live events broadcast within Fortnite in the future, highlighting its ever-increasing importance as a digital gathering place.
This event also served to demonstrate Epic Games’ great ability to organize massive events. The concert of these two artists, although not longer than a quarter of an hour, enjoyed very high production values, with numerous shot changes, multiple screens showing motifs from the new season of the game as well as the artists, and all sorts of details that made this experience truly memorable for the attendees, both in person and in the video game.
Both artists performed some of their most iconic tracks, and Snoop Dogg in particular, with his “The Next Episode,” knew how to get the crowd going, accompanying the singer as he interacted with the crowd.
All in all, it was a fun and one-of-a-kind event that once again demonstrates Epic Games’ expertise when it comes to organizing live events of this nature. When we attended the event from within Fortnite, we had no issues logging into the game or during the event itself, so Epic continues to hone its skills when it comes to organizing similar events in the future.
