Fortnite to compensate $72 million to those affected by erroneous purchases due to store design
The FTC is sending the first batch of restitution to those affected by Fortnite’s store design, who have begun receiving payments via PayPal and bank check.
All those affected by one of Fortnite’s most serious problems are beginning to see the light after receiving financial compensation. The original design of the game’s store was intentionally created to induce unwanted purchases, resulting in many users inadvertently getting items with the push of a button. In late 2022, Epic Games reached an out-of-court settlement with the FTC to reimburse those affected, and two years later, the first round of payments has begun for many of those affected.
FTC begins to compensate those affected by the Fortnite store design
Since last December 9, 2024, the FTC - the Federal Trade Commission of the United States - has begun compensating those affected by the Fortnite store, whose original design inadvertently led to purchases that then could not be refunded, or whose refund involved a cumbersome and not too clear process. This was announced by the federal agency on its website.
The total amount of this first batch of compensation is $72 million, and a total of 629,344 victims will be able to get back the money they spent on the video game. The average payment received by each victim is approximately $114.
The FTC wanted to fine Epic Games a sum of $520 million, but in December 2022, an out-of-court settlement was reached in which Epic agreed to pay that agency a sum of $245 million, which the FTC would use to compensate all those harmed by these actions of dubious morality.
With the arrival of this first round of payments, all those affected are lucky because they will be able to receive their refunds, even if it is several years later. The FTC adds that the remaining amount will be distributed to the victims at a later date, without giving a clear date.
If you have been affected by this Fortnite problem, from this form it is possible to request financial compensation, which can arrive in two different ways: via PayPal or by bank check. Of course, there is a thirty-day deadline to request this compensation via PayPal, and ninety days to request reimbursement via bank check. The deadline for all requests is January 10, 2025.
