Fortnite will pay players $126 million in compensation for unwanted purchases: Here’s how to claim your payment

Fortnite players who were affected by unwanted purchases can apply for a refund.

The Federal Trade Commission (FTC) has reinstated the process for Fortnite players who were affected by unauthorized purchases to get their money back. This is part of a $245 million settlement with Epic Games, the company behind the popular battle royale, following allegations of deceptive practices that led players, including minors, to make expenditures without their consent.

The original settlement, which was announced in December 2022, set an important precedent as the largest remand in video game history by the FTC. At the time, the regulatory agency noted that Epic Games had used online design tactics, known as “dark patterns,” to induce consumers to make in-game purchases they otherwise would not have made. Imagine, for example, trying to view an item in the store and accidentally purchasing it because of the location of a button.

If all this sounds familiar, it is because the process began in December 2024, when the first rounds of affected players began to circulate, paying a total of $72 million to 629,344 victims. It is worth remembering that the average payout is $114.

How can I apply for the refund?

Fortnite players who were charged in-game currency for unwanted items between January 2017 and September 2022. If you were affected by this Fortnite problem, from this form it is possible to request financial compensation, which can arrive in two different ways: via PayPal or by bank check. Previously, consumers had until February 14 to file a claim, but the FTC has now extended that deadline to July 9. A claim number or Epic Account ID is required to apply for a refund. A parent or guardian must apply on behalf of people under 18.
