Friend Request returns to the Xbox ecosystem for the first time since Xbox 360
It will be easier to keep track of your friends on Xbox.
After the end of the Xbox 360 era, the console ecosystem brought changes to the way we connect with friends and strangers we meet in games. This is about to change with changes that will allow users to “easily send, accept, or delete friend requests” within Xbox.
Starting this week, users in the Xbox Insiders program will be able to access this feature, which will enhance the way they connect and make friends in the gaming ecosystem. This option will be available to those on the console, as well as those in the PC Gaming Preview on Windows PC and on handhelds such as the Rog Ally.
What is changing in the Xbox friend system?
According to the release on Xbox Wire, users will now be able to “easily send, accept, or delete friend requests, making it simpler to connect with others. Friends are now a two-way, invite-approved relationship, giving you more control and flexibility. Meanwhile, following someone remains a one-way connection, allowing you to stay updated with their shared content, whether it’s another player, club, or game.”
If you need clarification about how this changes what was already there, remember that the way the current system works is that adding someone to your list makes you a follower until the other person adds you to their list as well. This often happens without the other players being notified, making it complicated when someone you know who is now your follower wants to initiate a friendship within the platform.
Something that Xbox mentions in its publication is that at the moment, “existing friends and followers will update automatically with this change. You’ll stay friends with people who had also added you as a friend previously and continue following anyone who hadn’t.”
