Game Freak and the Pokémon franchise suffer the biggest leak in its history

Game Freak, the main developer of the Pokémon series since its inception with the legendary Pokémon Red and Blue in 1996, has confirmed “unauthorized access” to its servers and the theft of all kinds of sensitive information about its employees and projects. The situation, reminiscent of the case of Insomniac Games and Rockstar and GTA 6, has resulted in about 1TB of leaked material, including details about Switch 2, Pokémon Legends: Z-A, and the 10th generation of Pokémon.

“We apologize for the leak of personal information due to unauthorized access,” reads a statement posted by the developer on its website. “Game Freak announces that in connection with an unauthorized access to our server by a third party, personal information of employees has been exposed. We sincerely apologize for the inconvenience and concern this may cause to everyone involved.”

“Personal data of our employees, including retirees and former employees, has been compromised. Names, email addresses.... We are communicating individually with those affected, but this announcement is for those we have not been able to reach. From here we are leaving a contact form for those who may be affected. We have already checked the server and taken steps to prevent this from happening again. We will continue to strengthen our security measures.

We’ll see how this affects the future plans of Game Freak and the Pokémon franchise in general, as often these leaks don’t result in anything more than silly discussions about the company’s decisions and unrest among its poor employees.
