Game Freak reveals its small internal team approach for Beast of Reincarnation: “not all folks internally here”
Despite the game’s ambitious scope, the studio is relying on external partners while keeping creative direction in-house.

During the latest Xbox Developer Direct, Game Freak offered a deeper look at its next major project, Beast of Reincarnation. Stepping away from the familiar world of Pokémon, the studio introduced Emma, an exiled protagonist traveling with her wolf companion, Koo, through a world devastated by “the blight”—a parasitic plant growth that has nearly wiped out humanity.
Despite the project’s ambitious scope, director Kota Furushima, best known for his work on the Pokémon series, explained how the studio is handling development. In a recent interview with IGN, Furushima confirmed that while the overall team is sizable, Game Freak is relying heavily on external partners. The approach allows the studio to keep a relatively small internal team focused on creative direction and production oversight, while multiple outsourced studios help bring the game to life.
A small core team with a global vision
“The team is quite large, as you can imagine, but I will note that it’s not all folks internally here at Game Freak,” Furushima explained. “We managed to seek out a lot of partner companies to work with us, companies, studios that are able to realize the vision of this game in the way that we wanted to make it, so we’re lucky to have a lot of people working on it externally as well.”
Gameplay centers on Emma’s ability to hunt Malefacts and seal their corruption within her own body. To stop the titular Beast of Reincarnation, players must track down and defeat powerful enemies known as Nushi. Absorbing the blight from these foes strengthens Emma, building toward the final confrontation. The experience promises a dark, atmospheric journey where the bond between hunter and wolf plays a central role.
