‘Game of Thrones’ is getting an MMORPG following in the footsteps of LotR, Star Wars, and Dune

The publishers behind The Finals are reportedly working on a ‘Game of Thrones’ MMO that’ll be set between seasons 4 and 5 of the HBO show.

Winter is coming to Westeros once again, although this time in the form of a video game. Nexon, the publisher behind The Finals, is preparing a new title based on the ‘Game of Thrones’ saga, as leaked by Redanian Intelligence. Like Star Wars: The Old Republic, The Lord of the Rings Online, and Dune: Awakening, the studio – still unknown – has opted for the MMORPG genre. What is most striking, however, is the period in which the adventure will take place: neither a prequel nor a sequel, but instead right in the middle of the HBO series.

Sources indicate that the action will take place in the North, between seasons 4 and 5 of the series. By then, Roose Bolton had already been appointed Warden of the North, while Jon Snow and Sam Tarly were at the Wall, attending to their duties at the Night’s Watch. In the capital, King’s Landing, the aristocracy hatched their plots and conspiracies to ensure the survival and advancement of their own families. King Joffrey I Baratheon, a tyrant if ever there was one, died poisoned at his own wedding, so his intended wife (Margaery Tyrell) ended up marrying Tommen Baratheon, the successor to the throne.

Although other video games in the saga featured the original voices of the ‘Game of Thrones’ actors, the original cast will not lend their talent to the well-known characters unless the situation changes later in development. Sources also indicate that the game will include a campaign, although the basis will be the online component. You can choose between a female or male character and the one not chosen will have a role in the adventure, as happened in games like Mass Effect Andromeda or Assassin’s Creed Odyssey.

What other Game of Thrones titles are on the market?

The Saga of George R.R. Martin has enjoyed several productions based on itself , although none has managed to stand out succesfully. French studio Cyanide set out to develop an RPG in the style of The Elder Scrolls, but without its brilliance. The fact that it runs parallel to the first season led to a narrative block that led nowhere. On the other hand, the same developer delivered the strategy game A Game of Thrones: Genesis.

Telltale Games touched countless successful sagas. The playable formula of The Walking Dead gave rise to countless video games, including Game of Thrones: A Telltale Games Series, destined to enjoy several seasons. Unfortunately, the developer’s delicate financial situation did not allow it, since some time later it closed its doors. A narrative game with decisions, which tells an unprecedented story with new protagonists, who of course encounter the heroes and villains of the HBO series.

The second season of ‘The House of the Dragon’ premieres June 16 on Max.
