George R. R. Martin, writer, on ‘The Winds of Winter’: “If that happens, my work won’t be finished”
Martin acknowledges that if he fails to finish the book, he would consider it a personal failure.
Will ‘The Winds of Winter’ ever be finished? That’s what millions of ‘Game of Thrones’ fans around the world are wondering, as the ‘A Song of Ice and Fire’ saga could remain unfinished. It’s something all readers fear, and it seems increasingly likely. George R.R. Martin has reflected on this in The Hollywood Reporter and warns about what will happen if he dies before finishing it.
“I would hate that. It would feel like a total failure to me. I want to finish,” says the author, referring to the practically impossible possibility of abandoning it prematurely. At the same time, he anticipates what will happen if he dies before he can finish his work. “If that happens, my work won’t be finished,” he says. “It’ll be like [Charles Dickens’] ‘The Mystery of Edwin Drood.’” In short, he makes it clear that he will not allow anyone else to finish it for him.
In the interview, Martin confesses that the process of writing ‘The Winds of Winter’ is causing him all kinds of feelings, and almost none of them positive: frustration, exhaustion, pressure from fans... The writer acknowledges that the work is already a decade behind schedule, but he is finding it increasingly difficult to make progress due to his own dissatisfaction with what he writes and his many commitments, which he has had to cut back significantly.
