George RR Martin reveals his favorite ‘House of the Dragon’ character

The author of ‘Fire and Blood’ and the ‘Song of Ice and Fire’ saga is a fan of morally grey characters capable of both heroic and atrocious acts.

George RR Martin

With the second season of ‘The House of the Dragon’ coming soon, it’s not a bad time to remember George RR Martin’s opinion on Daemon Targaryen. During the promotion of ‘Fire and Blood’, the book on which the series is based, the author recognized in an interview at the time that Daemon is his favorite character because he is capable of the best and the worst. This is how the writer explained it:

“You know I’m notorious for my love of gray characters, and one of the greatest characters in the entire story of Westeros is Daemon Targaryen, the rogue prince. Daemon is the younger brother of King Viserys the First. For a time he was the heir to the throne, and then Viserys started having children and he stopped being the heir to the throne. He’s a notorious bad boy, a rogue in every sense of the word. He was a rival for Viserys’ sister and his own niece Rhaenyra, and then later he became the husband of Rhaenyra. He switched his side several times, you never know what side he’s going to come down on. He’s a very colorful and unpredictable character, and I think he has to rank up there as my favorite”

Will there be revenge in the first episode?

Apart from the fact that this time there will be 8 episodes instead of 10, there will be no time jumps and there will be a great role for House Stark, Winterfell, and the Warden of the North, little is known about this second season of ‘The House of the Dragon’. The only clue is in the name of two of its episodes.

Episode one will be called ‘A son for a son’, and it will be centered on the Daemon himself, who will seek to avenge the death of Lucerys, Rhaenyra’s son who was killed by Aemond Targaryen (in turn, Alicent’s second son) at the end of the first season.

Episode four is called ‘A Dance of Dragons’, which is how the Targaryen civil war is known as in the history books of the Seven Kingdoms. A conflict that shook Westeros and that will force us to choose between the the “Green” Targaryens and the “Black” Targaryens.

If you haven’t read the book and now knowing that Daemon is Martin’s favorite character, What fate do you think has been reserved for the character?
