George R.R. Martin’s latest ‘Winds of Winter’ isn’t the news fans wanted to hear

Martin has warned fans that when ‘Winds of Winter’ is done and ready to hit the shelves, he’ll make a huge announcement to celebrate. But until then we must wait.

You have to understand George R. R. Martin, author of the ‘A Song of Ice and Fire’ series of novels which has given rise to five books, six if we include ‘Fire and Blood’, on which HBO based itself to produce ‘House of the Dragon’. Interview after interview he is asked about the state of ‘Winds of Winter’, which would be the sixth book after ‘A Dance with Dragons’ (2011), and its answer is almost always the same: He works on it when he can and when it’s ready, we’ll know. In the latest entry on his blog, he talked about the subject again.

When ‘Winds of Winter’ is done... it will be a great announcement

In his post, titled ‘On the road again’, honoring the classic Willie Nelson song, Martin has made it clear, so that we get the idea, that when he is on the road he is doing everything except writing. “When I travel, if I have a day or two to catch up with one of my editors or agents, I jump on it, " explains Martin on his blog. “Every time I travel to NYC, I get together with my literary agents, and my editors at Bantam and Tor.. along with old friends, family, and the like. That’s true everywhere I go. If I fly to Germany for a con or book fair, I will see my German agents, publishers, and translators. If it’s Italy or Spain or Finland, same thing. If I ever find myself in Brazil or Japan or Egypt, I’d try and connect with my Brazilian or Japanese or Egyptian publishers.”

This makes it clear that the pace at which Martin goes with ‘Winds of Winter’, in case there was any doubt, is rather slow.

“This is just the standard way of doing business, guys. It does NOT signify that some momentous announcement is at hand. It doesn’t signify anything, actually… except a desire to touch base, catch up, renew old contacts or make some new ones… and enjoy a nice meal,” Martin continues. “So calm down, please. When WINDS OF WINTER is done, the word will not trickle out, there WILL be a big announcement… where and when I cannot say.”.

The fans are still impatient though, since after ‘A Game of Thrones’ and ‘A Clash of Kings’ were released in the same year (1998), and continued with an acceptable cadence, 12 years have already passed since the release of what for the moment is the last book in the main saga, ‘A Dance with Dragons’.
