Geroge R.R. Martin isn’t entirely sure he’ll ever get to finish ‘Winds of Winter’

The next novel in the ‘A Song of Ice and Fire’ saga has been constantly delayed for over a decade, but now the author isn’t looking too hopeful about it anymore.

Juego de Tronos, Jon Nieve

It was in 2011 when George R.R. Martin published the latest main novel of ‘A Song of Ice and Fire’. By then, ‘Game of Thrones’ had already begun its journey on television, a journey that lasted until 2019. The series overtook the novels and the showrunners had to decide what to do next. The controversial ending was not the only discussion that occurred among the viewing community, which debated characters, situations, and episodes, but also about one of the great unknowns: the publication of ‘Winds of Winter’. So many years later, not even George R.R. Martin is clear on whether he is going to finish it, although he affirms that he is well and strong.

“Unfortunately, I am 13 years late,” he acknowledged in an interview with The Hollywood Reporter. “Every time I say that, I’m [like], ‘How could I be 13 years late?’ I don’t know, it happens a day at a time. But that’s still a priority. A lot of people are already writing obituaries for me. [They’re saying] ‘Oh, he’ll never be finished.’ Maybe they’re right. I don’t know. I’m alive right now! I seem pretty vital!”

No date on the horizon

In an entry on his official blog, he even joked with the idea that if he did not publish ‘The Winds of Winter’ before the New Zealand Wordcon (the national science fiction convention) he would allow himself to be locked “in a small cabin on the Isle of White.” He wrote that in 2019, he was never imprisoned and the new ‘A Song of Ice and Fire’ novel is not yet in bookstores nor does it have a publication date.

Martin recently said he had written only a few new pages of The Winds of Winter and the Fire and Blood sequel. He also shared his emotional state and explained that he had suffered a lot of stress during 2024. After the premiere of the second season of ‘House of the Dragon’, the author harshly criticized some aspects of the series, although HBO ordered the blog post deleted and issued its own statement. The writer wanted to avoid some changes in the adaptation and the elimination of Maelor Targaryen, one of the sons of King Aegon II and his sister Helaena Targaryen.
