Ridley Scott, the famous director of films such as ‘Alien’, ‘Blade Runner’, ‘Gladiator’, and ‘Alien: Covenant’, among many others, explained how they achieved his “biggest action sequence’ he has ever shot for a movie. This was shared by Empire after speaking with the filmmaker about the challenges they have overcome during the filming of ‘Gladiator 2′, the movie starring Paul Mescal in the role of Lucius. In this film we will see its protagonist face a colossal rhino, which has been recreated by mixing both practical and digital effects, giving rise to an unprecedented visual spectacle in the franchise and in the filmography of the British director.

This is how Scott himself explained it, sharing details about how they managed to film said scene for ‘Gladiator 2′ by mixing practical and digital effects and that can be seen fleetingly at the end of the trailer: “Computerisation and AI — you have to embrace it,” he said. “I can have a computer read every molecule and wrinkle on a rhino and then cut it on a thick piece of plastic, absolutely as a rhino’s body, which is then tailored to a skeleton shape.”

However, Scott maintains the habit of continuing to bet on practical effects combined with the latest in digital technology: “I have this thing that can do 40 miles an hour, spin on the spot, wag its head and snarl. A two-ton rhino with a guy on its back! I mean, it’s a lot of fun.”
