‘Gladiator 2’: these are the characters of the first movie returning for the sequel
A couple of characters from the original ‘Gladiator’ are returning for the upcoming Ridley Scott sequel, with most of their actors reprising their roles.
No, neither Maximus Decimus Meridius nor the actor who played him, Russell Crowe, will be present in ‘Gladiator 2′. The Roman general condemned to slavery defeated Commodus in the sands of the Colosseum. The death of Caesar happened a few minutes before, but the warrior succumbed shortly after and collapsed on the battlefield. The sequel, set about 20 years after the events narrated in ‘Gladiator’ eliminates any possibility of seeing Maximus, who has been dead for two decades. Someone might have expected a flashback, but except for surprise, it doesn’t seem like it’s going to happen. The question is, are there any characters who are back? The answer is yes.
In ‘Gladiator’, upon the death of Marcus Aurelius - murdered by his son in the film - Commodus inherited the throne and developed a kind of obsession with his sister Lucilla, played by Connie Nielsen. The emperor was jealous of Maximus, because not only had he been Marcus Aurelius’ choice to take over the government of Rome, but he also had a history with Lucilla in the past. The Roman matriarch will have her role in ‘Gladiator 2′. In fact, Nielsen is one of the only interpreters of the original who will return to the shoes of her character. “It has been crazy, a great privilege,” commented the actress in an interview with Screen Rant. “I keep saying the word ‘privilege,’ but that’s how I feel. It has been very emotional too.”
Lucio, the protagonist of ‘Gladiator 2′
In the original film, released in 2000, Lucilla had a son, little Lucio Vero. Passionate about gladiator shows, the boy admired the gladiator who was managing to defeat all his enemies, the warrior who was actually Maximus Decimus Meridius. So many years later, the boy is now a grown man who, despite his aristocratic origin, fights as a gladiator in the coliseum. There are few details about the plot, but in the teaser trailer he appears fighting an enemy on a rhinoceros. Spencer Treat Clark will not repeat as Lucio, since Ridley Scott has chosen Paul Mescal.
At first, it was said that Djimon Hounsou would return to play Jubo, Máximo’s slave friend, but in the end that will not be the case. The one who will be there is Derek Jacobi, who wore the senator’s toga and who will do so again in ‘Gladiator 2′. Senator Gracchus conspired against Commodus to overthrow him and helped Maximus, for which he was arrested and deposed, although after the emperor died he was restored with all honors.
‘Gladiator 2′ will be released on November 22 only in theaters. The story will take place during the reign of Caracalla, another of the most ruthless emperors that the Roman Empire produced.
