God of War: Laufey revealed at State of Play, starring Faye as the new protagonist
The new God of War game follows Faye on a journey through a myth-spanning afterlife.

The State of Play event has come to a close, but not before leaving us with a big surprise. And while Sony’s latest presentation had already given us a glimpse into the future of God of War, Santa Monica Studio had something else up its sleeve, as it unveiled a new game set in that universe. This time, Fey, Kratos’s wife in the Norse saga, will be the protagonist in God of War: Laufey, which will be directed by Cory Barlog.
The new installment poses a key question within the saga’s lore: what happens to the gods when they die? God of War: Laufey revolves around that idea, following the giant warrior from Jötunheim on a journey through the afterlife following her own death.
The Twilight of the Gods
“Death was supposed to be the end, but for Laufey (Faye), warrior and wife to Kratos, a new adventure is just beginning. Awakening unexpectedly in a strange land after her funeral, Faye discovers the plans she put in place to protect Kratos and Atreus are now at risk, reads the synopsis in the PlayStation Blog. “To save the ones she loves, Faye must fight through the afterlife of the gods — the Everywhen — where ruthless gods from across mythology vie for power in a land overflowing with dangerous magic.”
The adventure takes Laufey to a land that seems to blend the mythologies of various civilizations. The footage shown already reveals clear references to cultures such as Egyptian and Asian, suggesting a setting where multiple pantheons converge. The combat system is based on the one seen in the saga’s Norse phase, though with a more agile approach, in keeping with the protagonist’s style. The gameplay also reveals the presence of a peculiar companion reminiscent of the classic gelatinous cube from Dungeons & Dragons.
In terms of the cast, Deborah Ann Woll reprises her role as Faye, following her appearance in God of War Ragnarök. The protagonist won’t be alone on her journey: among her companions are Phranque, a curious cosmic cube played by Jack Quaid, and Rue, a guardian bound to a sword of immense power, portrayed by Perlina Lau.
