Goodbye to Barbenheimer in 2026, ‘Dune: Part 3’ aims to move forward and not coincide with ‘Avengers: Doomsday’
‘Dune: Part 3’ is aiming to premiere at the Venice Film Festival in early September.
December 2026 is shaping up to be spectacular in movie theaters, with two of the most eagerly awaited films coinciding not only in the same month, but on the same day: indeed, the planned release of ‘Dune: Part 3’ and ‘Avengers: Doomsday’ is on the 18th. Are viewers ready for Dunesday? Well, we may not have to ask ourselves this question anymore, because according to some reports, there is a possibility that Denis Villeneuve’s film will be brought forward by several months.
While Marvel Studios has no intention of backtracking, Villeneuve and his team, who finished filming ‘Dune: Part 3’ last November, are likely to do so. This information comes from Alberto Barbera, artistic director of the Venice Film Festival, who has assured that bringing the film forward to September “could be a possibility.” This move would be officially justified by the opportunity to premiere at the popular Italian festival, although it would kill two birds with one stone and avoid competing in theaters with Marvel’s juggernaut.
Some sources suggest that the premiere would be scheduled for the Venice Film Festival dates—the first and second weeks of September—and no later. “If ‘Dune 3’ were released in December, odds are that it wouldn’t be premiering at Venice, which takes place during the first and second week of September. However, an October or November release date? A splash on the Lido seems much more plausible,” say festival sources.
This would prevent a phenomenon such as the one we saw in 2023, when ‘Oppenheimer’ and ‘Barbie’ were released on July 21, something that became known as Barbenheimer. This year, we have already seen something similar in superhero format, with ‘Superman’ and ‘Fantastic Four: First Steps’ practically coinciding in theaters.

The fact that the two films will not be released at the same time will also affect many of Hollywood’s most renowned actors and actresses. On the ‘Dune: Part 3’ side, we find Timothée Chalamet, Zendaya, Robert Pattinson, Florence Pugh, Jason Momoa, and Rebecca Ferguson. Meanwhile, Robert Downey Jr., Chris Hemsworth, Pedro Pascal, Channing Tatum, Joseph Quinn, and many others have been confirmed for ‘Avengers: Doomsday’.
