Goodbye to physical PlayStation video games: Sony follows in the footsteps of GTA 6 and sets a date for the transition to digital

January 2028 will mark a turning point in the history of video games.

Update:

Most users will probably say they saw this coming. It’s now official: Sony has confirmed that it will no longer produce disc-based video games starting in January 2028. The Japanese company announced this on its official blog, explaining that the change affects not only PlayStation’s own titles but all games released after that date.

Sony has explained that the decision was made based on the message players are sending to companies through their purchasing habits: “As consumer preferences and the broader entertainment industry continue to shift away from physical discs to digital, physical game disc production for all new games releasing on PlayStation consoles will be discontinued starting January 2028. Following this date, new games will be available on PlayStation Store and at retailers in digital formats only. This transition has no impact on games that already released, or will be releasing, prior to January 2028 in disc format.”

The statement emphasizes that the way people consume video games has changed significantly in recent years: “The general preference for digital media significantly outpaces physical discs.”
