Goodbye to song limits on Spotify Free: now you can choose and play any song

Competition from YouTube Music has forced Spotify to take this user-friendly measure.

There is speculation that pressure from competition from YouTube Music has led Spotify to take this drastic decision. Whatever the case, users of the most popular music app will appreciate the rollout of one of the most anticipated features for those without a Premium subscription. From now on, all users who enjoy Spotify for free will be able to choose any song they want to listen to on the app, with no limits on how many times they can play it.

The news Spotify users have been waiting for

No more choosing a playlist and waiting for the song you really want to hear to come on. Spotify has announced that it will allow non-Premium users to search for, play, and share any song they want, whenever they want, without needing a subscription.

Until now, if we wanted to listen to a specific song, we had to follow the same process. Search for a playlist and skip until we reached it, always bearing in mind that we could only do this six times per hour. Now, this cumbersome method is a thing of the past.

However, there are some limitations that the company has not specified. “Only Spotify Premium users have complete control to play and skip music without restrictions,” a Spotify spokesperson told The Verge. “Mobile listeners of the updated free experience will be able to tap on any song or search for what they’d like to play, or if they don’t like a track or simply want to hear what’s next, skip the occasional song and carry on listening. Each user has a daily allocated amount of on-demand time. Once this limit is reached, users will then be limited to six-skips per hour.”

Obviously, this does not eliminate advertising for those who use Spotify for free, something that only Premium users will enjoy. However, it is a measure that will prevent more listeners from fleeing to rival applications such as the aforementioned YouTube Music.
