Update:

ByteDance is on the ropes in the United States. The country’s Supreme Court has confirmed that it will uphold the suspension of TikTok as of January 19, just one day before Donald Trump’s inauguration. The law protecting the blockade was upheld by the judges of the court, although the cabinet of the new president will be able to exercise a 100-day extension to the company to clarify its situation.

The issue has a long history. In March 2024, the U.S. House of Representatives passed a bill to ban TikTok with 352 votes in favor and 62 against. From there, it jumped to the Senate, which had the final say on its passage. It was eventually pushed forward to where we are now.

TikTok blockade: suspicion hangs over China

It all stems from U.S. government suspicions that its managers are selling user data to the Chinese government. The shadow cast over ByteDance and China’s control over it prompted members of Congress to try to curb its use in the country, although a number of Republicans raised their voices against the measure as “overstepping” their powers.

However, in order for TikTok to remain there, ByteDance will have to sell the territory to a third party. Names such as Elon Musk, determined to take another step into social media after the purchase of Twitter, are appearing in the betting pools -although ByteDance denied this. The latest figure to join the global bidding is MrBeast. The popular content creator has flirted with the intention of taking over the application to avoid the blockade.
