Goodbye to winning the Oscar: great films that swept the Golden Globes and lost at the Academy Awards
A list full of unforgettable works that did not achieve the same success at both awards ceremonies.
The Golden Globes are one of the most prestigious awards in the film industry. The awards presented by the Hollywood Foreign Press Association often go hand in hand with the Oscars, making them an unmissable event for film lovers. However, the big winners have not always managed to repeat the same success at the Academy Awards.
There are numerous examples of this situation, some as striking as classics such as E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial or Saving Private Ryan, which shone at the Golden Globes but failed to win the Oscar for Best Picture.
Films that stood out at the Golden Globes but failed to win an Oscar
We begin with ‘Some Like It Hot,’ the classic directed by Billy Wilder and starring Jack Lemmon, Tony Curtis, and Marilyn Monroe. The film won the Golden Globe for Best Motion Picture – Musical or Comedy, but it wasn’t even nominated for Best Picture at the Oscars.
‘E.T., the Extra-Terrestrial’ won the Golden Globe for Best Motion Picture – Drama, but failed to repeat its success at the Oscars, where it was beaten by Gandhi. Even so, it won four awards, including Best Original Score. Another classic worth remembering is ‘Toy Story 2,’ which won the Golden Globe for Best Motion Picture – Comedy or Musical, an award it did not win at the Academy Awards.
Another example that continues to be striking is ‘Saving Private Ryan.’ Steven Spielberg’s classic was surprisingly beaten by Shakespeare in Love at the Oscars, something that did not happen at the Golden Globes, where it did win. ‘Brokeback Mountain’ won the Golden Globe for Best Drama, but lost the Oscar to Crash.
