Google Maps has stopped warning users about speed traps and radars on the road

Were you used to knowing just when and where to slow down while using Google Maps? The app has now stopped warning users about radars in operation.

Google Maps

For many, speed radar alerts have been on Google Maps for years, allowing them to travel much more calmly. To such an extent that since these notices were implemented in 2019, they have become a travel essential. However, according to reports from Android Authority, this functionality is gradually disappearing from the application. This medium, focused mainly on electronics and digital services, states that Google has eliminated the option to report speed radars in its app.

The “Radar” label is replaced by “Police”

To date, Google’s web mapping platform allowed users to mark the exact location of speed radars on the roads, helping other drivers avoid speeding tickets. But after the last update, this possibility has been replaced by a more generic label: “Police”. The technology company has justified the change by explaining that it seeks to avoid misuse of the “Radar” category. They emphasize that users often used this option to signal any type of police presence (even if it wasn’t a radar).

The new “Police” label will have a more visible place in the incident report menu. It will appear after “Crash” and “Slowdown” and you will also have other options such as “Construction”, “Lane closure”, “Stalled vehicle” and “Obstruction on the road”. This reorganization reinforces Google’s intention to prioritize road safety, but not without consequences for drivers seeking more accurate information.

Goodbye Google Maps, new options?

At the moment this modification has occurred in the United States but it is likely that it will soon spread to other countries. The update has generated divided opinions. Although the “Police” label maintains the option to notify their presence, many drivers think that the existence of agents does not always imply speed control.

This loss could redirect some users to Waze, another application with online maps and the eternal rival of Google Maps. This application of Israeli origin (acquired by Google in 2013) continues to offer the possibility of reporting radars accurately. It is an app that was created in 2010 with the purpose of creating a community of drivers who share information with each other in real time.
