Google Maps launches ‘Z’ symbol to save you from all traffic fines
A new hidden icon has appeared on Google Maps that can be especially useful for drivers; we tell you what it means.

Google Maps, Google’s popular geolocation application, has introduced a new, somewhat hidden, but truly useful feature for the average driver: a small icon with a “Z” in the center surrounded by a blue circle. The icon is only visible when previewing the shortest route, but it provides important information that we may miss if we ignore the icon. Here is what it means and what it can do for our routes.
The true meaning of the ‘Z’ icon in Google Maps
As we have already explained, the new ‘Z’ icon in Google Maps is somewhat hidden. So much so that when we enter the data of a route between two destinations, a general description of the route and a small window appear at the bottom. Thus, in addition to the time, distance and location of, for example, a parking lot, a section with additional information will appear; if we expand this information window, the ‘Z’ symbol will appear.

But what does this icon mean? The ‘Z’ symbol refers to the environmental zones found on our route. This is a very useful piece of information that tells us whether or not we can circulate with our vehicle’s environmental sticker. Thus, by clicking on each entry through the ‘Z’ symbol, we can choose different routes according to our possibilities and options.
It is also possible to access more information and restrictions for each environmental zone through links provided by the application. However, this feature is currently only available to users of the mobile versions of Google Maps. In any case, other alternative applications, such as Waze, also provide information about the environmental zones near our position.
