Grand Theft Auto 6 not impacted by SAG-AFTRA strike

The road to Vice City remains clear for GTA 6.

The Screen Actors Guild-American Federation of Television and Radio Artists (SAG-AFTRA) strike began this morning, bringing actors within the guild to strike against the world of video games.  The reason for this strike is simple: after nearly two years, actors and studio representatives have failed to reach an agreement to protect voice actors and performance capture personnel from the use of artificial intelligence. This will affect a lot of video games that are still in production, as the strike targets 10 of the major video game publishers, including Take-Two. And before they come to tell you that “GTA is delayed”, we have good news.

Grand Theft Auto not affected by strike

GTA 6 is one of the most anticipated titles with an expected release date of fall 2025, and fortunately, according to the IMA [Interactive Media Agreement] contract itself, it will not be affected by the strike.  According to a statement given to Eurogamer, this contract allows artist to continue to participate if a video game was already in production before August 25, 2023. Considering that a game like Grand Theft Auto VI has been in development for years, this is reassuring that the game will not be affected by this strike.

“The language in the IMA is clear that video games that were already in production prior to 25th August 2023, including live service games, are not subject to the strike and remain covered by the ongoing terms of the 2020-2022 IMA. Performers would not be in violation of the strike order if they continue working on these games,” SAG-AFTRA declared.

On the other hand, live service games like Fortnite or Apex Legends may be affected in the future, though they have a 60-day grace period for artists to continue working for now.
