GTA 6 could be the most expensive video game in history: The astronomic cost estimated for its development
The CEO of Take-Two Interactive confirms that it has been “expensive.”
Rockstar Games has pulled out all the stops with GTA 6, the highly anticipated new installment in the series. The game is the most anticipated release of the year, a project that is set to be one of the most expensive in history, if not the most expensive. Although there are no official figures, Business Insider estimates that development costs have reached between $1 billion and $1.5 billion to date.
Strauss Zelnick, CEO of Take-Two Interactive, hasn’t specified a figure, but he has acknowledged that development “was expensive.” There is no doubt that making a triple-A video game like Grand Theft Auto 6 is not cheap. The development costs of triple-A titles have skyrocketed in recent years, to the point where Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War cost as much as $700 million.
Unlimited financial resources for GTA 6
In an interview with Bloomberg, Zelnick himself noted that development costs have risen significantly; however, in the case of GTA 6, Take-Two Interactive is providing its teams with “unlimited financial resources” because they are striving to “deliver perfection.”
The fact that GTA 6 has been so expensive inevitably raises the question everyone has been asking for years: how much will the game cost? Zelnick hasn’t given a clear answer and has simply said that it offers more value than it costs. However, Bank of America has suggested to Take-Two that the game should cost $80.
