GTFO’s final content update, Rundown 8, ends the game’s story with a bang

Fans of GTFO rejoice! A new Rundown is available right now, and it’s a big one! Announced during The Game Awards 2023, Rundown 8 is the final chapter of the game’s long-running story, and it’s releasing right now.

Titled “Duality”, Rundown 8.0 has been developed by the team at 10 Chambers as the grand conclusion to the entirety of GTFO. For active players that have been there since the game first released in Early Access back in 2019, this is quite an important event: R8 will take you through to an actual conclusion of the story, and while we cannot say what surprises (and horrors) await you down in the abyss, it’s safe to say that it’s been entirely designed as a parallel of what the community and the devs have lived through with - and inside of - the game.

The best moment to jump into GTFO

For those of you unfamiliar with the game, GTFO is a 4-player cooperative horror shooter that has been designed from the ground up to be played with your friends. Communication and synchronization is key as you explore pitch-black facilities and try to survive hordes of biological horrors, all while completing the whims of the sadistic Warden that constanyl send the 4 main characters down into the horror.

Whether you’re here for the story or for the gameplay, you’ll find that the game has been divided into expeditions, which act as your standard missions or stages. What’s more important are the Rundowns, which since release have acted as small campaigns that have progressed the story of the game with every update.

Up until now, players have only been able to play whatever current Rundown there was in the game so far. It’s a rotating content framework that has allowed for the careful creation of new content, that due to the limited size of the development team at 10 chambers was chosen as a necessity to be able to maintain the game and its content while still crafting more with each update. Well, that’s all about to change with the release of Rundown 8.

What’s next for GTFO and 10 Chambers?

For the past 18 months, the devs have been working on adding back every Rundown into the game, since given that R8 will be the final chapter and no more new content is coming to the game they now have the resources to maintain everything released so far up to their quality standards. They are calling this “GTFO - Final Edition”.

While this means that no more story updates will be released in the future (or new maps or weapons), 10 chambers has promised to keep updating the game with fixes and performance patches. In the end, the game now has over 80 expeditions for players to tackle, which translate to dozens or even hundreds of hours of content. And as a treat, the game will have a free weekend on Steam to celebrate the release of Rundown 8.0! So grab some friends, and get ready to face the horrors that GTFO has prepared for you.

And if you’re wondering why GTFO has to get a definitive end, well, the devs themselves gave us the answer during The Game Awards: they’re already working on a new game that will take them back to their roots with heists, mysteries, evil corporations, and more 4-player co-op goodness.
