Guerrilla Games unveils Horizon Hunters Gathering, a co-op spin-off set in the Horizon universe
The new title shifts the franchise toward tactical team-based combat with rogue-lite mechanics.
While fans of Aloy and the Horizon franchise are waiting for a third entry in the series, there are some news. Guerrilla Games has announced Horizon Hunters Gathering, a cooperative action title designed specifically for tactical team play. This new project marks a significant shift for the series into the realm of online co-op.
Tactical Combat Meets Rogue-Lite Mechanics
In Horizon Hunters Gathering, players step into the shoes of a diverse roster of “Hunters.” Unlike Aloy’s solo journey, this game emphasizes specialized roles. Each Hunter comes equipped with unique melee or ranged playstyles. To keep the experience fresh, Guerrilla is implementing a rogue-lite perk system, allowing players to craft specific builds that complement their teammates during a mission.
The core gameplay loop revolves around two primary modes revealed today:
- Machine Incursion: A high-intensity mode where teams must repel waves of machines emerging from underground gateways, culminating in a massive boss fight.
- Cauldron Descent: A multi-stage trial through ever-changing rooms. This mode tests a team’s coordination through brutal combat encounters and environmental puzzles.
The mechanical precision the series is known for—like tearing components off machines—is now a collaborative effort. One player might focus on freezing a target while another delivers the finishing blow to a weakened power cell.
A growing world with Cross-Play
While the focus is on multiplayer, Guerrilla confirmed that the game is fully canon. It will feature a narrative campaign with new mysteries and characters, expanding the lore of the post-apocalyptic frontier. Between missions, players will gather in a social hub also called “Hunters Gathering,” where they can upgrade gear, customize their appearance, and meet other players.
Technical accessibility is also a priority. The game will support cross-play and cross-progression between PlayStation 5 and PC, ensuring that friends can play together regardless of their preferred platform. For those eager to jump in, a closed playtest is scheduled for the end of February via the PlayStation Beta Program. This initial test will be crucial for the developers to gather feedback and refine the skill-based combat before the full launch.
