Update:

While James Cameron is immersed in ‘Avatar 3,’ Mexican director Guillermo del Toro is enjoying success with ‘Frankenstein’, the new adaptation of Mary Shelley’s classic that is now available on Netflix. But success and the ability to generate great excitement around their work is not the only thing that unites these two filmmakers, as they have been friends for a long time, and a curious story about them has recently come to light.

The story of Guillermo del Toro’s father’s kidnapping in 1998, with the intervention of James Cameron, who paid a negotiator to secure his release, is known to many people, but what few—practically no one—know is that the two lived together, and one of the main hobbies they shared was their passion for anime. It was the Mexican who revealed this in an interview with Konbini.

‘Patlabor’

This was the anime that James Cameron invited Guillermo del Toro to watch. It is an adaptation of the manga created by Masami Yūki in 1988. It is a shonen set in an alternate reality in which mechas coexist with humans in the 1980s. The anime has 47 episodes. There are also three films based on the manga, but none of this content is currently available for streaming.

‘Battle Angel Alita’

When someone recommends something to you, it’s normal to respond in kind, and Guillermo del Toro knew exactly which anime he wanted Cameron to see: ’Battle Angel Alita’, the 1993 miniseries. Unfortunately, it’s not available to watch online at the moment either.
