Guy Ritchie’s most underrated war film is available on Prime Video

‘The Covenant’ went unnoticed by the public, being one of the most unknown of the English director.

The Covenant El Pacto Guy Ritchie

Guy Ritchie has a filmography featuring a diverse range of titles. After touching the sky with his first two films, ‘Lock & Stock’ and ‘Snatch,’ the Englishman has been varying the genres in his work, but without giving up his peculiar style. After returning to his origins in ‘The Gentlemen’ and making his worst film, the live-action ‘Aladdin,’ the British filmmaker tried his hand at war.

‘The Covenant’ (2023) did not gross even half of what it cost, since outside the United States it was released directly on Prime Video. Despite this, it is considered the great hidden gem of his filmography and one of his most underrated films. It features Jake Gyllenhaal and Dar Salim in the lead roles.

What is ‘The Covenant’ about?

With the full title of ‘Guy Ritchie’s The Covenant,’ this is a war movie that follows U.S. Army Sergeant John Kinley, who is sent to Afghanistan after the start of the war. There he has a translator, Ahmed, who is considered a traitor by the Taliban. After a series of conflicts and ambushes, Ahmed manages to save Kinley’s life, and he is sent back to his country. However, when he learns that the translator could not escape, he decides to risk his life and return to Afghanistan to rescue the one who helped him in the past.

What stands out the most in ‘The Covenant’ are the performances of both Jake Gyllenhaal and Dar Salim, whose rapport and chemistry are more than latent. The war scenes are well filmed by Guy Ritchie, as are the tense moments. It received good reviews from professionals, and the English director ventured to make a new war film, ‘The Ministry of Ungentlemanly Warfare.’ This one, however, passed without glory.
